Political factions gather to learn Mao Zedong Thought in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, in 1968. They vow to work towards the overall victory of the "great proletarian cultural revolution". Xiao Zhuang  Youths travel to work on new farmland in Beidahuang, or "the virgin island of the North", Heilongjiang province, in 1968. Weng Naiqiang

-- The second bridge spanning the Yangtze River opens to traffic in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province.

-- "Workers' propaganda teams" are dispatched to all educational institutions. The teams's "permanent leadership" of schools is announced.

-- Based on false charges, State Chairman Liu Shaoqi is expelled from the Party and removed from all posts.

-- The People's Daily publishes Mao Zedong's directive for urban high school graduates to go to the countryside to receive "re-education".
