-- The script reform starts in February, simplifying the shape of hundreds of Chinese characters.

-- The CPC Central Committee endorses family planning and plans to promote it in March.

-- In April, Premier Zhou Enlai leads a Chinese delegation to the Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia. Zhou proposes that countries should seek common ground while shelving differences and that the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence should serve as the basis for friendly relations and cooperation between countries with different social systems.

-- The Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is established on Oct 1.
