Pingyao hosts major international sculpture event

Updated:2018-07-20 14:24

Sculpture Projects Ping Yao (SPPY), a new art festival, was opened in the ancient city of Pingyao, Shanxi province, on July 20 and is set to last for one month.

Based on the former successful organization of Pingyao International Photography Festival and learning from the experience of Sculpture Projects Münster (SPM), SPPY features a professional organizing committee and the participation of world-famous artists.

SPM is an exhibition of sculptures in public places around the town of Münster in Germany. Held every 10 years since 1977, SPM highlights the best sculptures and installations from a worldwide selection of artists.

The event aims to not only create a platform for sculptors and artists to come together and exchange their ideas, but also brings high culture to Pingyao residents, helping the city develop a reputation as a center for culture.

Joseph Beuys, William Anastas, Raphael Hefti and other sculptors and artists around the world, are expected to take part in the event.

The inclusive and open concept of the event allows the artists to interpret Pingyao in their own unique way through their artwork. For example, the idea of Raphael’s artwork was inspired by the planning and development of the town.

This year’s event is being held in an abandoned factory. Before the opening of the event, the venue had undergone extensive renovation work, bringing it up to the requirements to host a major international exhibition.
