JINJIANG, China - Uruguay's University of Republic were crowned the men's champions at first FISU University Football World Cup, beating the University of Wollongong from Australia 2-1 in extra time in Jinjiang, Southeast China on Sunday.

The Latin American side had an early lead in the final as Santiago Pallares scored the opener in a counterattack at the third minute of the game before Marcus Beattie found the equalizer for Wollongong eight minutes later.

Both sides had chances in the rest of the regular time but just missed them all. In the second half of the extra time, the University of Republic was awarded a penalty, and Pallares finished with composure to seal the 2-1 victory.

In men's third-place match on Sunday, Myongji University of South Korea won over the Autonomous University of Mexico State 4-2 to win the bronze.

The first edition of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) University Football World Cup kicked off in Jinjiang, southeast China's Fujian province on Nov. 21. The nine-day tournaments have eight women's teams and 16 men's teams to compete in 62 matches.
