President's speeches help detail China's stance on 'major country' responsibilities

Remarks made by President Xi Jinping at a series of recent high-level United Nations meetings "project a broad vision with the world in mind and a major country's firm commitment", State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.

Wang made the comment while briefing media including China Daily on Friday about the significance of Xi's attendance and addresses via video link at recent major events held to mark the 75th anniversary of the UN.

The president attended the high-level meeting to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the UN on Sept 21, the General Debate of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly on Sept 22, the UN Summit on Biodiversity on Wednesday and the high-level meeting on Thursday marking the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.

In addressing these events, Xi responded to such major questions as what kind of world mankind will face in the post-pandemic era, what role China will play in the world and what kind of international order is needed.

Xi also expressed China's position that the country will firmly adhere to multilateralism, safeguard the authority of the UN, follow the path of peaceful development and win-win cooperation and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

The speeches and key points made by the president have been welcomed and highly praised by various countries, and will have a "positive and far-reaching impact" on the evolving international landscape, Wang said.

The remarks and ideas expressed by Xi at the events have injected fresh impetus into global cooperation against the COVID-19 pandemic, helped in consolidating a new consensus for the reform of the global governance system and provided a new solution for promoting global economic recovery, Wang said.

Also, they have set a new benchmark for the building of a global ecological civilization, added new impetus to the global cause of women and displayed a sense of responsibility for supporting the central role of the UN, he added.

In regard to the fresh positions and explanations delivered by Xi this year at the UN General Assembly, Wang said they further enrich and develop the theoretical and practical connotations of Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy.

In the interview on Friday, Wang singled out Xi's three key speeches at UN podiums in the past five years-the speech at the General Debate of the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly in 2015, the one at the UN Office at Geneva in 2017 and the one at this year's General Assembly general debate.

The three speeches perfected the theoretical architecture of the thought of building a community with a shared future for mankind, Wang said. They also lead innovation of the theory and practice of major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics, he said.

When addressing global governance at UN events recently, Xi elaborated on what should and should not be changed as he urged global efforts in honoring the principles of the UN Charter, upholding multilateralism, adapting to changing times, bolstering international coordination and boosting the say of developing countries.

Wang said such remarks "expressed the common aspirations of most countries and pointed out the right direction for the reform of the global governance system".

At the events, Xi also made fresh points in tackling global recovery and development, including promoting openness, convergence, win-win cooperation and upholding reform and innovation.

Wang said these points chart a course for the world economy and display China's responsible role in sharing its vast market potential with other countries and in promoting win-win cooperation.

Also, the president has set a new benchmark for promoting global ecological progress as he put forward proposals including strengthening the power of action to tackle challenges to the environment, Wang added.
