SAN JOSE - Colombian Luis Fernando Suarez was Monday named as the new head coach of Costa Rica ahead of the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup.

The 61-year-old replaces Ronald Gonzalez, who was sacked after the Los Ticos finished fourth in the CONCACAF Nations League earlier this month.

"Luis Fernando Suarez is the new manager of Costa Rica's national team following a decision made by the executive committee of the [federation]," the entity said in a statement.

"The appointment was based on ... the recommendations of a designated committee and the results of a working session," it added.

Suarez has already tendered his resignation with Colombian club Atletico Bucaramanga, whom he joined in February.

The Medellin-born coach has also had spells in charge of the Honduras and Ecuador national teams over a career spanning more than two decades.

The Gold Cup will be played in the United States from July 10 to August 1.
