Chinese parents are always ambitious for their children, but no one wants their children to change into a learning machine.

The excessive academic burden brought by the off-campus tutoring is not conducive to children's all-round development. Although private tutoring institutions can help students increase their academic scores, they cannot foster students' passion for seeking knowledge and self-discipline, which are the key factors that determine success in life.

By banning on private tutoring and reducing the burden of homework and emphasizing the importance of diagnostic and analytical functions of homework and curriculum knowledge instead of rote learning, the "double reduction" policy will help China build an inclusive and quality learning society.

Children take part in a running game at a kindergarten in Huzhou, Zhejiang province, on Wednesday, the first day of the new semester for most students across China. Schools nationwide are taking steps to relieve the academic burden of their students and promote the all-around development of the youngsters. [WU ZHENG/FOR CHINA DAILY]
