Although unable to go to school for many years, Yang did not fall behind in his studies. He was admitted to the University of South China in Hengyang, Hunan province, in August.
Coming from a single-parent family, Yang's bond with his mother is deep. She was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2011.
To ease the family's situation, the university provided a job for Yang's mother. Now they can take care of each other.
