Breaking the Shadows, a highly-anticipated crime drama, will begin streaming on iQiyi on Thursday.

Starring A-list actress Sun Li and actor Luo Jin, the series follows a determined female police officer who spends years investigating the mysterious disappearance of her close colleague. When a gruesome dismemberment case surfaces, she finds clues connecting it to her missing partner. As she pushes through mounting obstacles, she realizes that the criminals are always one step ahead, hinting at the presence of a mole within the police force.

As of Wednesday, trailers and videos of the drama, which consists of 17 episodes, had over 1.5 million views on the social platform Sina Weibo.

In an effort for freshness, the series adopts an unconventional perspective by centering on a female hero, highlighting the strength of women in law enforcement, according to the producers.

Sun said in an early interview that despite being the work of two emerging writers, the script is skillful, with each character having a distinctive arc that showcases the complexity of human nature.
