Pakistan re-elected to UN Narcotics Commission

Pakistan re-elected to UN Narcotics Commission for a four year term after securing highest votes.

Pakistan has been re-elected to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the 2026–2029 term, acknowledging its significant contributions in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

The re-election took place during a resumed session of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), where Pakistan secured the highest number of votes among competing countries from various regional groups.

In the 54-member Council, the voting results were as follows: Pakistan received 50 votes, followed by Kazakhstan with 46, the United Arab Emirates with 43, Kyrgyzstan with 41, and Iran with 25.

In a statement, the Pakistani Mission to the UN expressed gratitude for the strong support from ECOSOC, noting that it reflects global trust in Pakistan’s continued commitment to counter-narcotics efforts and participation in multilateral discussions on drug policy.

The statement also emphasized Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate with ECOSOC members and the broader UN community to enhance the CND’s effectiveness as the central global body for drug policy, ensuring alignment with international conventions.

Since 1946, Pakistan has played an active role in supporting the UN’s supervision of the implementation of international drug control treaties.
