A Love Never Lost, a period drama set over a century ago, recently premiered on the streaming platform iQiyi, immersing viewers in a turbulent era that reshaped China's destiny.

Set on the eve of the Qing Dynasty's collapse (1644-1911), the series offers a fresh perspective on how Chinese revolutionaries toppled imperial rule and embarked on a grueling journey to rejuvenate the nation.

Directed by Wang Wei, the story follows Liang Xiang, a young aristocrat whose fate intertwines with that of Yang Kaizhi, a fiery revolutionary activist. Despite their different backgrounds, the two are chosen to join the first batch of Chinese students sent to Japan for military training. Along the way, they cross paths with three other youths: a fellow student handpicked by the Beiyang warlords, a radical revolutionary who believes in violent means like assassination, and a courageous young woman who defies her wealthy family to pursue independence.

As their lives become entangled, the five navigate a chaotic historical landscape marked by pivotal events — including the Xinhai Revolution and the Wuchang Uprising — that ultimately brought an end to China's feudal past. Their personal struggles and sacrifices mirror the nation's tumultuous path toward transformation.

During pre-production, the creative team conducted extensive research, delving into historical archives and consulting historian Jia Yinghua to ensure authenticity. Every detail — from costumes and props to etiquette — was meticulously crafted to reflect the era faithfully, according to the producers.

Since its debut on May 13, the show has amassed 110 million clicks to become one of the most popular dramas this month, according to the live tracker Maoyan Pro.
