Xi congratulates new chairperson of Kuomintang
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, congratulated Cheng Li-wun on Sunday on being elected chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang party.
Cheng won the election in Taiwan on Saturday with 50.15 percent of the vote.
Xi expressed his expectations for the two political parties to uphold their common political foundation and unite the vast majority of people in Taiwan to deepen exchanges and cooperation, boost common development, and advance national reunification.
He noted that for many years, the two parties have, on the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence", promoted cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, worked to safeguard peace and stability across the Strait, and enhanced the affinity and well-being of compatriots on both sides, yielding positive outcomes.
At a time when the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is an unstoppable historical trend, Xi said.
He called on the two political parties to firmly safeguard the shared home of the Chinese nation, uphold the fundamental interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait, and work together for a brighter future for the Chinese nation.
Cheng expressed her gratitude in a reply sent to Xi on Sunday.
Echoing Xi's views, Cheng commended the many historic achievements made in promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, thanks to the common political foundation of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence".
Cheng said that both sides across the Strait, being descendants of Yan and Huang emperors, belong to the Chinese nation.
On the existing foundation, the two political parties should strengthen cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, promote peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, strive for the greatest benefits for people on both sides, and open up a grand prospect for national rejuvenation, she added.
