Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Tuesday that the mutual visa-free arrangement between China and Russia is the latest example of a closer partnership between the two countries and their peoples.

Lin made the remarks at a regular news briefing in Beijing, saying that it is good news that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Monday allowing Russia's visa-free policy for Chinese citizens to take effect.

"We believe it will further enhance the friendship between our peoples and promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields," he said.

Moscow's move followed Beijing's Sept 2 announcement of a one-year trial for a 30-day visa-free policy for Russian ordinary passport holders, which took effect on Sept 15.

Lin said China "sincerely welcomes more Russian friends who take advantage of the visa-free policy and enjoy spontaneous trips to China", adding that Beijing also looks forward to Chinese travelers "making good use of the new policy and embarking on wonderful journeys to Russia".
