Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei in Central China, is known as a "thoroughfare connecting nine provinces", which signifies its strategic importance. It is also where the history of Hubei, home to culturally important artifacts such as archaic bronze ware, meets modernity to cultivate generations of artists, including figures active in the contemporary art scene.

Founded in 1965, the Hubei Provincial Academy of Fine Arts in Wuhan has been a major participant in the city's art scene. Dozens of works by the research institute's 11 artists are now on show at the Art News of China gallery in Beijing, unfolding a broad picture of the young-generation painters from the province.

The works cover the three major genres of classical Chinese painting — mountain-and-water, figure, and flower-and-bird — reflecting the institute's and Wuhan's support for young artists in the inheritance of traditional art.
