SAN FRANCISCO - Two people were wounded Thursday in a shooting involving US Customs and Border Protection agents in Portland, Oregon, authorities said.

Portland police said officers found a man and a woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Both were transported to the hospital and their conditions were not immediately known.

The shooting occurred one day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot dead a woman in Minneapolis, Minnesota, intensifying public attention on federal immigration enforcement and prompting thousands of people to protest.

"Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident," Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said in a statement, adding that the city could not "sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts."

Wilson said Portland is not a "training ground" for militarized agents and warned that the "full force" threatened by the administration has deadly consequences. He called on the ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed.

US Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon urged the public to keep any protests related to the incident peaceful.
