Officials attribute the landslide that struck Dafang county, Guizhou province, on May 22, 2025, to unfavorable topography and extreme rainfall, according to a recent report from the provincial department of natural resources.

The report said poor terrain and unstable slope structures were the underlying causes, and that extreme rainfall triggered the collapse. Seven people were confirmed dead in the disaster, and 12 people are still missing. Direct economic losses from the landslide totaled 19.9176 million yuan ($2.86 million).

On-site rescue operations continued until May 29, 2025.

Investigators found that the disaster zone had not been recorded as a hazard point. Long-term rainwater infiltration had weakened the rock mass, and the exceptionally heavy rains precipitated the collapse.

The report recommends that local authorities improve the accuracy of geological-hazard early-warning systems and focus monitoring and mitigation on concealed areas that are prone to instability.
