Asgarova Vafa, a scholar from Azerbaijan who specializes in the field of education, says she has found both academic purpose and a sense of belonging in Hangzhou.

After completing her postdoctoral research at Zhejiang University, she chose to stay on, drawn by the city's openness, livability and strong academic environment.

Now teaching at Zhejiang International Studies University, Vafa advocates interactive, student-centered learning. She encourages discussion, welcomes differing views and treats students as partners in learning — an approach her students say builds confidence and critical thinking.

Beyond the classroom, Vafa has embraced life in Hangzhou, from the West Lake and Xixi Wetland to the autumn fragrance of osmanthus in Manjuelong. She also praises the city's supportive policies for international professionals, including the Join in Card, which integrates work permits, banking and social services.

Calling Hangzhou her second home, Vafa says the city has shaped her growth from student to scholar. Her story reflects how Hangzhou's inclusive academic ecosystem continues to attract global talent — and how cross-cultural exchange is quietly flourishing, like the osmanthus in autumn.
