A documentary series exploring the cultural heritage and historical evolution of China's Jiangnan region is set to premiere on Tuesday, offering viewers a comprehensive journey through the area south of the Yangtze River from prehistoric times to the present day.

The 12-episode series, titled "The Making of Jiangnan", will air on Shanghai's Dragon TV in eight parts. The series, produced by DocuChina, will broadcast nightly at 10 pm through March 10, with each episode running 55 minutes.

Against the backdrop of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region, the series traces the development of Jiangnan throughout history, seeking to uncover the cultural codes that have sustained the region.

The series begins by examining the region's formation and Shanghai's historical relationship with the greater Jiangnan region. It then chronicles the achievements from the Hemudu and Liangzhu cultures to the present day, exploring how the region's geographical environment shaped local survival strategies and fostered its unique cultural character.

Subsequent episodes highlight the contributions of Jiangnan women to regional development — exemplified by historical figures like Huang Daopo — who advanced the region through their innovations and labor. The documentary also showcases Jiangnan's craftsmen and artisans, showcasing the traditional and modern aspects of the region's craftsmanship spirit.

The series further delves into Jiangnan's literary traditions and emphasis on practical learning, examining its artistic expressions through traditional performance arts.
