China's main stock index gained 1.04 percent on Thursday as investors were encouraged by strong first-quarter corporate earnings.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended at 3,783.06 after touching a record intra-day high of 3,784.68. Gainers outnumbered losers by 589 to 251.

Strong first-quarter earnings continued to boost the market. The Securities Times reported that with more than half the listed companies reporting, combined sales had risen nearly 50 percent and net profits had roughly doubled.
