Chinese shares open slightly higher on last trading day of 2008

Chinese shares open a bit higher on Wednesday, the last trading day of 2008. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, gained 0.11 percent, or 2.04 points, to 1,834.95 at the opening.

The smaller Shenzhen index was down 0.18 percent, or 12.08 points, to open at 6,546.08 points.
