BEIJING - Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co Ltd will recall more than 24,000 CR-V sport utility vehicles in China beginning April 12 due to a wiring problem that could cause the cars' low beam headlights to stop working, China's top quality watchdog said Friday.

Honda's recall affects 15,411 CR-V SUVs made in China between April 14, 2004, and March 23, 2005, as well as 9,197 imported CR-V models manufactured between Jan 23, 2002, and Nov 5, 2003, according to a statement by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Honda said the CR-V electric wire connected to the headlight switch is insufficient in length, causing it to wear down. This could result in overheating and eventually lead to a switch malfunction and a loss of low beam headlights, thus increasing the risk of crash.

Honda said it will inspect and replace parts of the defected headlight wiring system free of charge and letters will be mailed to affected owners of CR-Vs.

Consumers can call their respective dealers for a service appointment.
