China urges political commitment to six-party talks

China calls on all parties concerned to deliver their political commitment to resume the six-party talks over nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Wednesday at the board meeting of the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Tang Guoqiang, Chinese ambassador to the Vienna Office of the United Nations, said that progress has been made through the six- party talks last year.

Tang urged all parties to implement the joint statement adopted in September last year at the end of the fourth round of six-party talks and called for an early resumption of the talks.

"All parties should adopt a constructive attitude," he said, adding that China has been actively mediating among the concerned parties and has recently exchanged views with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.

The Korean Peninsula nuclear issue concerns the peace and stability of the peninsula as well as the northeast Asia, he added.

During the last round of six-party talks in Beijing September last year, the DPRK agreed to dismantle its nuclear program in return for security guarantees and energy aids.

However, the DPRK has said it will not return to the talks if the United States does not lift the sanctions imposed on the country.
