21,000 violations of China's price laws and regulations have been investigated in the first six months of 2009, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said Thursday, one day after it released new draft regulations on monopoly prices, China Business News reported Friday. That is a 37 percent decrease compared to the same period last year.

Education, medical services, transportation and government agencies are the major four areas where monopoly prices and violations of fair competition are most frequent, the NDRC said. The NDRC is China's most senior economic planning body.

The NDRC said the Chinese government has dealt with illegal earnings that total approximately 780 million yuan (US$114.7 million), and assessed a total of 300 million yuan (US$44.1 million) in fines.
