WASHINGTON - China hopes that various parties will continue to step up diplomatic efforts and actively seek effective ways to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ma Zhao said Monday afternoon in Washington, half an hour after Chinese President Hu Jintao met his US counterpart Barrack Obama.

Ma, also the spokesman for the Chinese delegation attending the nuclear security summit, made the remarks while answering a question on the Iranian nuclear issue during a press briefing on the bilateral meeting between the two leaders.

"China is always committed to upholding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East," Ma said.

Ma said that China and the United States share the same overall goal on the Iranian nuclear issue.

"China stands ready to maintain consultation and coordination with the United States and other parties within the P5+1 mechanism, in the United Nations and through other channels," Ma said.
