Roughly half of the men aged 50 years old and above suffer the benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a prostate disease, in the Chinese mainland, experts said.

As the men age, they face greater risk of the disease, which could affect more than 80 per cent of men older than 80, said Guo Yinglu, famed expert in urology and andrology at an awareness raising event jointly held by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association and international pharmaceutical giant Merck on Saturday, the World Men’s Health Day.

Showing symptoms like urinary hesitancy, frequent urination, and painful urination, the condition would result in renal failure if left untreated, medical studies showed.

"Men aged 50 and above should go for regular screenings for the disease for early detection and intervention," said Guo.
