The total number of government micro blog accounts in China was nearing 20,000 by the end of October, 2011, almost triple that of a year ago when micro blog services were first made available in the country, chinanews.com reported Monday.

According to China's first annual report on government micro blogs, the accounts are owned by officials, government departments and Party departments from 34 provincial level administrative regions. The report was released Monday at a high-level micro blog forum in the presence of around 200 government representatives from 23 provinces and cities across the nation.

Geographically speaking, the more developed a region is, the faster the growth of government micro blog accounts. Regions like Beijing, South China's Guangdong province and East China's Jiangsu province saw the fastest growth in the past year, with each having over 1,000 new users.

Departmentally speaking, public security departments own the most accounts and saw the fastest growth. Around 4,000 more public security departments and 1,700 more officers opened accounts in the past year, accounting for one-third of the total number of government micro blog accounts in China. Publicity, tourism and justice departments, as well as the Communist Youth League Committees, also witnessed outstanding growth in accounts.
