In the Doodle the Monkey King conjured a peach, wind, a fire wheel, a temple, a golden cudgel and a bag, which all could move with accompanying sound by clicking on them.

That Doodle was also the only one in which the images were not designed by US illustrators but provided by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio.

After that Google launched quite a number of Doodles to commemorate Chinese icons, including Confucius and Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang. There have also been several to celebrate traditional Chinese festivals.

For example, Google launched an Old Snakey game to celebrate the Year of Snake at this year's Spring Festival. The background music is the widely known Snake Dance. The Doodle ran on New Year's Eve and the first day of New Year, being played by hundreds of thousands of Google users.

"The challenge we are facing is that the birthdays of many ancient Chinese sages cannot be found, so that we don't know which day to celebrate," said Wang.

He stressed that fun and creativity are the team's two major considerations.

"There are many Chinese elements that worth utilizing, but we will only use those that are fun," he said.
