TCM yet to be proven effective against Ebola WHO

(ECNS) Updated: 2014-08-13 14:21

A spokesperson with the World Health Organization (WHO) said in Geneva on Monday that they were not clear if traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is effective against the Ebola virus.

The spokesperson said TCM has made some headway in fighting malaria, and might be effective against Ebola. Some experts have proposed adopting new treatments and preventions for the virus, she added.

The WHO has endorsed the use of experimental Ebola drugs, saying it is ethical in light of the deadly power of the outbreak, with more than 1,000 people having been killed by the virus in West Africa.

China has sent three teams of disease-control experts to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, along with medical supplies and relief worth 30 million yuan ($4.9 million) to assist in the prevention and control of Ebola.

That was the second batch of relief from China. The first was sent in May.
