China publishes video of Japan's WWII surrender

(Xinhua) Updated: 2014-09-03 19:22

CHANGSHA - A Chinese memorial sight has released archive footage of Japanese representatives surrendering in China at the end of World War II, as the country on Wednesday marked the 69th anniversary of victory in the Anti-Japanese War.

The 10-minute video, taken from 20 minutes of footage shot by the Americans, was released by the Memorial Hall of the Anti-Japanese War and the Acceptance of the Japanese Surrender, which is located in Zhijiang County, Hunan Province.

It shows events between Aug. 21 and 23, 1945, when Japanese representatives fled to Zhijiang to hand in a map of Japanese troops deployed in China and sign a surrender memorandum, days before Japan signed the formal surrender on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2.

Wu Jianhong, curator of the memorial hall, said the video will prompt Chinese to cherish hard-won peace and send out a warning to Japanese who have been denying Japan's wartime atrocities.
