On Oct. 1, 1950, more than 400,000 people gathered at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In this picture a children's parade marches through Changan Avenue when the left gate and the right gate still stood on each side of Tiananmen Square. The gates were demolished in 1952.
