Tong Bingang, a famous fluid dynamicist, was born in Zhangjiagang city, Jiangsu province, in 1927.

In 1950, he graduated from the department of mechanical engineering of Nanjing University (now Southeast University).

He graduated from Harbin Industrial University with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1953. When Tong Bingang was 25 years old, he was appointed as the acting director of the newly established Theoretical Mechanics Teaching and Research Center.

In 1991, he was elected to be a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Tong Bingang is now also a professor at the CAS graduate school.
