Blair: Shanghai is a city full of energy
( 2003-07-23 10:18) (Xinhua)

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tuesday that Shanghai is a city full of energy and British enterprises should take advantage of the business opportunities brewed by the city's fast economic growth.

Blair made the remarks when meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng. Despite his brief stay here, Blair said he had held fruitful talks with Mayor Han and the two sides had open and sincere discussions on economic and business cooperation.

Blair said British entrepreneurs have achieved great success in their investment in Shanghai and their willingness to form a partnership with the fast-growing municipality will not change.

Han said the economic and trade cooperation between Shanghai and Britain has increased significantly in recent years. By the end of June this year, projects invested by British firms in Shanghai had reached 428, with a total contract value of 1.7 billion US dollars.

Han said he believed Blair's visit to Shanghai will further boost the economic, trade, cultural and educational exchanges between Shanghai and Britain.

This was Blair's second visit to Shanghai. His first was on Oct.9, 1998.
