The safe deposit service
provided by banks is becoming increasingly popular in Shenzhen.
Shenzhen tops the nation in terms of per capita use of the safe deposit
service, according to Monday's Daily Sunshine.
More than 10 banks provide the service in Shenzhen, and insiders estimate
that the number of safes in the city exceeds 50,000.
Most safes have been rented out, said the paper. Small safes suitable for
individuals and families were the most popular.
The rent for the smallest is only about 20 yuan (US$2.44) a month. Customers
can put important documents such as housing ownership certificates, fixed
deposit bank accounts, diploma certificates and other valuable belongings into
the safe. The safes have tight security with locks and the customers' identity
verified by fingerprints.Privacy is protected as the banks' safety check only
identifies the shape of the items to be put into the safes.
China Construction Bank's Shenzhen branch pioneered the service in
1997.
