Symposium on Chinese dietary culture opens in Sichuan
( 2003-10-17 21:46) (Xinhua)

The eighth symposium on Chinese dietary culture opened Friday in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, with the theme of the history of Chinese dietary culture and research on food production.

Experts and scholars from 12 countries and regions, including the United States and Britain, attended the three-day event. They will discuss topics, including folklore, anthropology, history, archeology and sociology.

A special program is a discussion on soybean food and its history, initiated by Sidney W. Mintz, a leading professor at Johns Hopkins University, and 10 other experts. They will probe the influence and significance of soybean food on the dietary culture in East Asia.

The symposium has received wide and positive responses during previous sessions in Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo and elsewhere.
