Serbia wants more Chinese investment
( 2003-11-07 21:44) (Xinhua)

Serbian leader Zoran Zivkovic said Friday that his country has to get through a tough economic situation and wants more investment from China, whose economic growth will be Serbia's goal in the coming years.

Zivkovic, Serbian prime minister of the Republic of Serbia and Montenegro, said at a Sino-Serbian trade conference held here that Serbia is reforming its financial and judicial sectors, which will facilitate foreign investment to flow in and companies to operate.

Zhang Wei, vice-president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), said China encourages enterprises to invest abroad, noting that China's soaring economy will also provide a huge market for world business, including Serbian enterprises.

Located in east Europe, Serbia could serve as the bridge for Chinese goods to enter the European market, besides its favored taxation on FDI, said G. Bozidar Delic, Serbian minister of finance and economy.

Figures from Chinese Customs show that the trade volume between the two countries hit 109 million US dollars in the first nine months this year and China's imports from Serbia surged by 363.8 percent.

About 200 business people from Serbia and China attended the conference, covering industries of petroleum, furniture, chemicals, automobiles and machinery.
