Suspects causing disturbances on Tian'anmen Square sentenced
( 2003-11-28 16:45) (Xinhua)

Two people were sentenced by the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court Friday on charges of disturbing social order on Tian'anmen Square in the Chinese capital in October.

Zhang Liji, 49, from Fuzhou city of east China's Fujian province, was sentenced to six years in prison for an attempted explosion at Tian'anmen Square.

On Oct. 8, Zhang drove a car to the Jinshui Bridge on the moat on the northern fringes of Tian'anmen Square and tossed leaflets out of the car.

He then attempted to set himself and the car on fire by igniting the gasoline and fireworks on board his automobile before being stopped by police on patrol.

The court claimed Zhang had violated the Criminal Law by disturbing social order and endangering public security. But it also said he ought to be given a shorter, lenient sentence because his action did not produce a serious consequence and he was confirmed mentally disordered.

The other suspect, Ye Guoqiang, 43, from Beijing's urban Xuanwu district, was sentenced to two years in prison for a disturbance at Tian'anmen Square.

Ye jumped into the Jinshui Moat on Oct. 1, National Day, causing a serious disturbance.

Police also found that Ye had made dozens of trouble-making attempts in the Tian'anmen Square area and areas adjacent to government departments and foreign embassies since May 2003.
