Rural, urban development to be more balanced

A prestigious Chinese economist expressed his belief in Beijing Saturday that the
balanced development of China's rural and urban areas is expected to be speeded
up.
Li Yining, president of Beijing University's Guanghua School of Management,
said that the Third Plenary Session of the 16th CPC Central Committee has
provided guidelines for the amelioration of the rural-urban and
industrial-agricultural gaps that have long existed in China.
Promoting a coordinated development of the rural and urban areas will help
raise farmers' income and push forward all-round social progress, he noted.
China's rural areas, which are home to the majority of its population, have
long lagged behind the urban areas in terms of social and economic development.
Li called for more efforts to develop the non-government sector of the
economy to help spur agricultural industrialization and the construction of
small and medium-sized cities and towns.
A decision made at the Third Plenary session of the 16th CPC Central
Committee encourages non-government enterprises to "be stronger" and provide a
guarantee for the prosperity of the non-government sector of the economy, Li
noted.
