'Search Dog' romps through Chinese net

Chinese media company Sohu.com unveiled a search engine on Tuesday, saying its "Search Dog" was a loyal tracker for surfers in China, the second-biggest Internet backyard in the world in terms of users.

Sohu, which means "Search Fox" and made its name as a search engine before becoming an Internet portal, competes against Google, Baidu.com and Yahoo for eyeballs in China's online search market.

The new Web site, www.sogou.com, is minimalist and colorful, following in the style of sites such as Google and Baidu. SoGou means "Search Dog" in Chinese.

"The launch of SoGou marks a new stage in Sohu's search product development and brand strategy," Charles Zhang, Sohu's chief executive, said in a statement.

"The reason we select the 'Search Dog' image is to reflect loyalty to our users."

Sohu makes a portion of its revenues from sponsored search, which includes both paid listing fees and pay-for-click advertising.

Search revenue stood at $2.4 million during the second quarter of 2004, an increase of 91 percent from the same period last year. Total revenue in the second quarter was $27.3 million.
