Death toll rises to 17 in central China's mountain torrents

The death toll from mountain torrents in central-south China's Hunan Province rose to 17 , with 35 missing, local authorities said Wednesday.

The mountain torrents began at 0:30 a.m. and have flooded 47 villages in four townships Xinshao County in Hunan, including Taizhimiao Township, Tanfu Township, Chenjiafang Township and Quetang Township, affecting 54,600 people. Rescue work is underway.

Taizhimiao Township is the most seriously hit and its communication lines, traffic and power have been completely cut.

According to the Hunan Provincial Headquarters for Flood Control and Drought Relief, at least 24 cities and counties in the province were hit by torrential rains from May 30 to June 1. Five cities and counties reported rainfall of more than 100 mm, with the most rainfall exceeding 200 mm.

According to local meteorological department, rainfall in the county reached 197 mm from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday.
