Jia Zhangke to shoot two new films

After winning awards at various international film festivals for "The World," director Jia Zhangke will shoot two new films in the coming months.
Jia made this announcement Tuesday at the Eighth Shanghai International Film Festival.

He said he would shoot a film in Shanghai this winter based on a novel by Chinese writer Su Tong, a love story set during the "culture revolution." He was also preparing another film about revolutionaries in 1920s Shanghai, and would invite foreign stars for the film, such as French actress Juliet Binoche.

Being selected as chairman of the jury panel for the Asian New Talent Awards at the festival, Jia said he would publish a book describing his experiences during the distribution of "The World."

Jia said the box office for the award-winning film had reached 2 million yuan (US$340,000). However, some media outlets reported that the box-office results were not good for the first run. "The development of Chinese film is not only the responsibility of our directors or producers, but also of the media," said Jia.
