US to be prudent on textile safeguards

In agriculture, an agreement on a memorandum of understanding to improve bilateral co-operation on animal and plant health and food safety was reached.

"The agricultural negotiations are very successful," said US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns.

"With the MOU, we will establish a vehicle to address the sanitary, phytosanitary and food safety issues that have hindered US agriculture's access to this important market."

Both sides highlighted the importance of further dialogue for solving disputes.

"China and the United States should properly handle problems in trade and economic co-operation through fair dialogue and consultation," said Premier Wen Jiabao yesterday when meeting the US delegation.

"Both China and the United States must view the bilateral trade relationship from a global perspective."

Closer bilateral trade and economic co-operation would benefit global economic prosperity and stability, he said

In yesterday's meeting, progress was also made in talks on China's market economy status, distribution services and trade promotion.

"The meeting is a step forward," said Gutierrez, adding that the exchange was "honest and frank."

"Both China and the US treasured the opportunity," said Vice-Premier Wu Yi who headed the Chinese delegation.
