China will "unswervingly" boost the reform of the exchange rate formation mechanism in the principle of benefiting both China and the world at large, he said.

China and the United States have also agreed to increase cooperation in fighting terrorism on the basis of mutual benefit, and have signed a memorandum of understanding on a mega-port plan.

The two countries also agreed to expand exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, science and technology, as well as among the youths, said Hu.

Hu said it is in the common interest of both China and the United State to oppose and contain "Taiwan Independence", and to safeguard stability across the Taiwan Straits.

"The Chinese government and people have been committed to safeguarding peace across the Taiwan Straits, and will make the utmost efforts with the utmost sincerity to achieve the country's peaceful reunification, but we will never tolerate 'Taiwan Independence'."

He also said China and the United States would work with parties concerned to promote the process of the six-party talks, in an effort to achieve a peaceful solution to the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue at an early date.

Prior to the talks with President Hu, Bush attended a religious service in a Chinese Protestant church early Sunday morning, the first item on his agenda of 40-hour China tour.

On a Sunny winter day, Bush, together with his wife Laura, came over to the Gangwashi church, located on the bustling Xisi street in downtown Beijing.

Bush is the third US president to visit Chinese church, following his father in 1989 and Bill Clinton in 1998.

Bush was doing chorale service and praying with over 700 Chinese followers. Yu Xinli, president of the Beijing Christian Council, and Pastor Du Fengying presented Bush with a Bible in Chinese and English.
