2008 Games starts sculpture hunt
With exactly three years to go before the Olympic flame arrives in Beijing, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) yesterday launched two artistic campaigns of contrasting scale. For those who think big, BOCOG is asking for proposals for public sculptures celebrating the Olympics, while for those working on a smaller scale, the committee is also running a calligraphy competition. "Anyone interested is welcome to participate," said Wang Ning, vice-director of BOCOG Culture and Ceremonies Department. "The solicitation organizing committee will also invite calligraphers and designers from home and abroad to contribute their works." The starting date for entries will be in the second half of this month, with a final deadline set for October 31. A judging panel will then select finalists, from which the winning works will be chosen. For sculpture selection there is a three-stage process. First, event organizers will collect design themes from sculptors and designers all over the world. Next, 290 designs will be selected and three copies of each entry will be made, forming an exhibition to tour major Chinese cities. Finally, 20 designs (symbolizing the XXIX Olympiad) will be awarded gold, silver or bronze medals. New donation With a little more then 1,000 days to go until the Beijing Games in August 2008, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne received a fresh donation from China yesterday - copy of "The Olympics and China," a collection of Olympic-related pictures launched by Beijing-based Civilization Magazine on August 1.
