在美國讀書，很多來自非英語國家的同學都會選修ESL（English as Second Language），即第二語言英語。課程結束前的一個禮拜，老師沿襲舊例，在他家舉行結業聚會。同學們帶著本國風味的食物來參加聚會。老師更是趁機讓我們用英語介紹食物的配料和烹制方法。輪到我時，老師突然改變話題，要我談談對ESL這門課的看法。他問：“How do you like it, so far?”
我先是一愣，接著反問他: "Your sofa is made in Italy, isn't it?" (你們家的沙發（Sofa）是意大利制造的，對不對?) 話剛說完，已惹得大家哄堂大笑。（摘自《世界日報》和信）
