“Black sheep”敗家子或害群之馬的意思，不過黑色也有一些褒義的用法。例如“in the black”就是指“公司盈利”的意思。因為一般情況下公司的賬簿上是用墨水的顏色來區分盈利和虧損的。虧損帳是用紅色墨水書寫的，也就是我們平時說的“赤字”(in the red)，而賺錢的商店就是“a store in the black”。
此外，還有些用法是把white和black放在一起的。例如：Your proposal sounds all right, but can I see it in black and white? （你的計劃聽起來挺好，我能看看書面材料嗎？）
還有些人總是“see things on in black and white”，意思就是說這些人看問題非黑即白，過于絕對化。
