Straw man

讀過葉圣陶先生的童話集《稻草人》嗎？知道“straw man”這個(gè)詞在英文中有什么特殊的意思嗎？

Straw man在當(dāng)代的英語中最常見的意思是 “a weak or imaginary person, object, or issue set up in order to be triumphantly refuted”（假象的對(duì)手，很容易對(duì)付的敵人）。

Straw man的另一種常見的意思是 “a person whose only function is to cover the activities of another，a front”（幌子）。

這個(gè)詞最初的詞義“稻草人”出現(xiàn)在16世紀(jì)，而現(xiàn)在使用的這些修辭用法都是從19世紀(jì)后期才開始出現(xiàn)的。

近些年來，可能是出于“男女平等”，還出現(xiàn)了中性的“straw person”以及專指“不堪一擊、外強(qiáng)中干”的女性的straw woman這個(gè)詞。
