朋友Y的住所不大，多年前置業(yè)，六百多英尺面積。當(dāng)時他自稱蝸居，但實際上也算相當(dāng)寬敞了。Y說日前聽朋友M文縐縐地提到：The toilet has the need of repairing，自然地想到“蝸居”的浴廁也該修理了。他說：My toilet is also in need of repairing。朋友S說to have the need of... 和to be in need of... 意思一樣，都是“需要……”或者“有……之必要”，前者是較舊的說法，顯得文雅而有婉曲之感。后者比較“現(xiàn)代化”，現(xiàn)在普遍通用。to have... 和to be... 在許多表現(xiàn)方式中用以表現(xiàn)相同意思，但以to be... 較為通用。
