這個詞組的意思是：處于不利的地位，處于困境中 (in a difficult position)，源自一個叫做凱利的彈子游戲(Kelly pool)。其中有一種打法是這樣的：全部的彈子必須按一定的順序擊落彈袋，只有一顆黑色的彈子除外，這顆黑色彈子的分值是八分。如果另一個彈子碰到了黑彈子，擊彈子的一方就要被罰。因而，如果八分的黑色彈子恰好處在要打的彈子前面，那擊彈子的一方勢必處于危險的位置。所以，behind the eight ball就被解釋為“處境危險，無可救藥”了。例如：
----We're going to miss our connecting flight because of this storm.
----Looks like we're caught behind the eight ball. Nothing we can do.

I want to be honest with the boss, but if I tell him the truth, he may fire me. I feel like I'm behind the eight ball on this one.
我是想老老實實跟老板講,可是又怕告訴他真相之后他會炒了我。我真是進退兩難。
