kickoff的本意是“足球中的開球、開賽時間”，如：The kickoff is at 4 o' clock.（足球賽今天下午4時開賽。）在口語中，kickoff 常被用來表示“（社交集會、比賽等）開始、序幕”，報道中的kickoff正是此意。例如：The dance marked the kickoff of the charity's fund drive.（舞會標(biāo)志著該慈善機(jī)構(gòu)募集基金運動的開始。）
kickoff的動詞形式是kick off。如：An increase in oil price increase would kick off a new round of inflation.（石油價格的上漲將引起新一輪的通貨膨脹。）
