Actress Charlize Theron has signed on to star in 'The Burning Plain', an upcoming film with which screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga is set to mark his directorial debut.

The film, being financed by 2929 Productions, begins shooting in November.

Theron, also associated with the project as executive producer, will play the role of Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood.

Arriaga, who has been scripting for 11 years, has written 'The Burning Plain' for himself. He says that the film consists of thematically connected storylines, just like his previous scripts.

"There are very intense love stories here that take place in different places and times, with characters trying to find the healing powers of love, forgiveness and redemption," Variety magazine quoted him as saying.

The film is being produced by While Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.

"The approach to storytelling is so specifically Guillermo. He helped create a new way of telling stories, and he's taken that to a new level with this script," Parkes said.

Marc Butan of 2929 has revealed that around 20 million dollars will be spent on the film's production.

"Our plan is to back talent we believe in and while Guillermo is a first time filmmaker, he's such an accomplished writer with a unique voice that it was a natural move for him to direct," said Butan.

Theron will next appear in the Paul Haggis-directed 'In the Valley of Elah'.
